Jeremiah as Christian Scripture: A New Full Course Resource

Greystone Theological Institute is pleased to announce a new full course resource now available on Greystone Connect. In Jeremiah as Christian Scripture, Dr. Matthew Patton explores how a faithful, careful reading of Jeremiah leads to a deeper knowledge of the text, a growing devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ, and a greater love for the Church.

“For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”
Romans15:4

In the Reformed tradition we have a high view of the Old Testament as Christian Scripture. We know that all of Scripture belongs and comes from Christ and therefore witnesses in a rich way to Christ crucified and raised, and yet, some books are more challenging to read in this life-giving way than others. This course builds on ancient as well as recent insights into Christian hermeneutics in the pursuit of a sensitive, Christ-exalting, and edifying reading of the book of Jeremiah.

The purpose of this course is to:

  1. Gain greater skill in Hebrew exegesis (especially discourse analysis and literary analysis) by engaging numerous texts in the original language of the book of Jeremiah.

  2. Develop a deep familiarity with the major themes of the book, its historical context, and the theological issues it raises.

  3. Understand the book of Jeremiah as Christian Scripture, placing it in its canonical context and discerning its distinctive witness to Christ.

  4. Become familiar with key trends in the modern scholarly study of the book.

  5. Develop theological and practical insights from the book that can strengthen the Church today.

Course Sections:

  1. Hermeneutics

  2. Text and Context

  3. The Faithless Bride

  4. Idolatry and Hypocrisy

  5. The Impossibility of Repentance and the Certainty of Judgment

  6. The Prophet

  7. Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, and the Nations
