Kline on Old Testament Exegesis: A Free Greystone Resource
Meredith G. Kline never published a full treatment of Exegesis on the Old Testament. However, Greystone Theological Institute is pleased to host his over 20 hours of lectures on Old Testament exegesis in Zechariah—newly edited and remastered—for FREE on Greystone Connect. Dr. Kline was a brilliant scholar full of wisdom, humor, and grace. His insights will deepen your appreciation for the Word, his prayers will bless you, and his wit will put a smile on your face. These lectures give us an ear to the Kline often missed in the formal structures of publication. Dr. Meredith G. Kline (1922-2007) was an American theologian and Old Testament scholar who was an influential voice for covenant theology in the confessional Reformed tradition. He is perhaps best known for his work in the area of suzerain vassal treaties in the second millennium BC in relation to biblical covenant forms, and is also well known for his defense of the framework interpretation of the creation account in Genesis. His views on these topics and others are in some ways deeply traditional and in other ways unique and fresh as proposals for advancing Reformed theology. Though Kline was not himself self-consciously rooted in patristic biblical hermeneutics, one can't help but notice the ways his instincts about the meaning of scripture resonate powerfully with our ancient fathers, making his work a perhaps unexpected but also undeniable resource for the renewed interest in the theological reading of scripture in our time. To be sure, like all theologians and biblical scholars, the continuing work of scholarship has discovered places here and there where his proposals can be modified, reconfigured, or even corrected, and few would agree with every jot and tittle of what Kline proposes. Even so, one is sure to find Kline's staunch allegiance to the scriptures as the inspired, authoritative word of God, useful for the Church's ministry in this world and age, and unfailingly stimulating and refreshing.
Kline was an ordained minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and had a long career as Professor of Old Testament at various institutions including Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia; Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary; and Westminster Theological Seminary, California. Greystone Theological Institute is pleased to make this example of Kline's work available to you, and we are able to do so because of the generosity of various partners and friends who own or host these recordings and have agreed to permit us to distribute them. Consider writing Amoskeag Presbyterian Church in Manchester, New Hampshire a word of thanks and appreciation for their generosity. And thank you too for your support of Greystone Theological Institute. We trust you will enjoy and be edified by this example of our ongoing efforts to resource your continuing education and edification for the glory of our Triune God.
