What were the views of the Westminster Divines regarding tradition? How was tradition used during the Westminster Assembly? Interestingly, we find at the Westminster Assembly that the theologians most cited or appealed to on the floor of the assembly—not just their published works, but in the course of debate as they're meeting—include Calvin and Beza, as would be expected, but also Augustine and Chrysostom, with many others mentioned including Cyril of Alexandria, Cyprian, Tertullian, and Jerome. In the course of the debate, they were dealing with the biblical text with a view to the history of exegesis and the history of Christian reflection on these passages. This is the orientation of a humble Reformed catholic. Episode 10 of Quick to Listen is a brief selection from lecture 1.1 of Dr. Mark A. Garcia's module, Rescuing Mary from Rome: The Virgin in Scripture, Theology, and the Church. In this selection, Dr. Garcia considers the catholic orientation of the Westminster Divines and the innovation of Roman Catholicism.
