Theology precedes formulation. This essential axiom helps reorient our study of the early Church and their confessional documents. A close reading of patristic texts leads one to see that the God confessed in the Creeds is the God already worshiped for centuries in the Church. That is, the liturgical expression of the Church is not produced by the Church's creedal confessions, but her creedal confessions assume what the Church has already expressed in her liturgical life and worship. Episode 4 of Quick to Listen is a brief selection from lecture 1.3 of Dr. Mark A. Garcia's full course module, Early Christianity. In this selection, Dr. Garcia considers the relationship between doxology and theology in the early Church.
